Tom: Hey, what are you doing?

Sarah: I'm reading a book about space exploration. It's fascinating!

Tom: That sounds interesting. Why are you so intrigued by space?

Sarah: Well, I'm planning to become an astronaut someday. So, I'm studying everything I can about space.

Tom: Wow, that's impressive! When are you going to start your training?

Sarah: I'm starting next month. I'm really excited about it!

In this dialogue, the present continuous tense is used to talk about actions that are happening at the moment of speaking or are planned for the future. For example, "I'm reading," "I'm planning," and "I'm starting" are all examples of the present continuous tense.

She is reading a book.
📗 The present continuous tense, also known as the present progressive tense, is used to talk about actions that are happening right now or are in progress at the moment of speaking.

How to Form the Present Continuous Tense:

To form the present continuous tense, you need two things:

1. The verb "to be" in the present tense (am, is, are).

2. The base form of the main verb with the -ing suffix.

Examples:

Affirmative:

I am working on my project.

She is eating dinner right now.

They are playing soccer in the park.

Negative:

I am not studying for my exam.

He is not watching TV at the moment.

She is not cooking dinner tonight.

Interrogative (Question Form):

Am I studying too much?

Is he watching a movie?

Are they playing basketball?

When to Use the Present Continuous Tense:

Actions Happening Now:

"I am reading a book."

"She is writing an email."

"They are talking on the phone."

Temporary Actions:

"He is working on a project this week."

"They are staying at a hotel while their house is being renovated."

Future Plans or Arrangements:

"We are meeting at 7 PM tonight."

"She is flying to Paris tomorrow."

Note:

Remember that the present continuous tense is used for actions happening at the moment of speaking or for temporary actions, not for habitual actions or permanent situations. For those, we use the simple present tense.
